SIWA-Economat Redeyef & Bégayer : Festival Explore 120426
The Tunisian artistic collective SIWA-Economat Redeyef and the effervescent French group Bégayer combine their bursting reservoirs of ideas, their handmade instruments, their unusual unidentified sound objects, and their love of forms created for their own sake. A beautiful, long-standing friendship comes together for a unique performance, where musical traditions, dance, and 16mm projections meet
BIO
Siwa platform invited Loup Uberto to carry out several artistic experiments at the Economat de Redeyef, an artistic and civic laboratory where freedoms, speech and public life are experimented with through creation. For the past 4 years, Loup Uberto has maintained a close friendship with the artists at the Economat.
Redeyef is a town in south-west Tunisia, which emerged from the earth in 1900, built on phosphate-rich soil by French colonists and became, over the course of a century, the crucible of intense industrial exploitation and numerous trade union uprisings. In 2014, the Economat, the former miners’ general store, was reinvested by the Siwa platform and its inhabitants. Since then, the building has been maintained collectively, in place of an artistic and civic laboratory within the town, where the songs of the Bedouin tribes and the poems of mining labor resonates.
In April 2023, after 4 years of collecting and collective composition, Siwa invites Bégayer to the Economat. We set up what we have in common: a vast mess of handmade instruments, invented sound objects and rootless psalmodies, to be followed by a series of joyful recordings, a vast agglomeration of damaged and unpredictable forms…
Winter 2024, came to France to reunite with for a week-long residency at La Fonderie (Le Mans). Then this wide band of 10 to 12 Franco-Tunisian-Sardinian musicians took over for a one-off concert, a great celebration where the singular voices of Redeyef intertwined with the noise-driven surges of Bégayer.
