Encre : ‘creuser nos pertes’ (new single)
Encre began in 1998, in a student room in Brighton, where Yann Tambour recorded his first track. It was released two years later as a 7-inch single on Active Suspension, accompanied by a second track recorded while travelling across the Channel, before he settled in Paris at the turn of the millennium.
Over the following two years, he shaped the singular aesthetic of Encre’s self-titled debut album, released in 2001. The record blended subtle orchestral samples with the dissonances and noise of musique concrète, whispering and giving voice to the unspoken stories of others, as if to ward off the violence they conceal. This long, breathless journey continued with two albums released on Clapping Music, including Flux in 2004. A third album, Plexus II, a 45-minute instrumental piece, was released on the Norwegian label Miasmah.
Encre has since left a lasting impression with its then-unusual and daring blend of off-kilter orchestral samples, musique concrète, poetic bitterness and the dark undercurrents of spoken word.
26 years later, Encre returns with a new single, creuser nos pertes, and a live quartet, revisiting and re-exploring this body of work. The lineup features Maëlle Desbrosses or Juliette Weiss (viola, double bass, sampler, bells), Julien Pontvianne (clarinet, tenor saxophone, sampler, harmonium, bells), Amélie Grould (drums, percussion) and Yann Tambour (guitar, sampler, vocals).
