Alexis Degrenier
BIO
Alexis Degrenier lives and works near Clermont-Ferrand.
After studying classical percussion and composition, he decided to follow paths as vast as they are remote, invoking the music of G. Ligeti, the metric systems of the Maqam and Middle Eastern music, as well as the pulsations of everyday mechanics, and the music of Central France through the study of the oblique listening of sound spaces.
He draws his inspiration from literature or philosophy to extract what he wishes to transform; a concept into affect.
Thus he learns as much from oral traditions as from the written music in his instrumental practice and decides to integrate these forms in his solo for percussion and objects ‘Mouvements fantômes, membres miroirs’, where time is transformed into periods of time to become an (in)exhausted pulse, a solo shifting according to spaces and possibilities.
Today he collaborates with La Tène, La Nòvia‘s “In C” project, and has performed with the group Tanz Mein Herz, the ensemble Minisym, l’insub. Meta Orchestra, the percussion trio Cerbère, co-composes OutreNoir (with Golem Mécanique) and produces the soundtrack for Rose Lowder‘s films, while composing the music for the dance piece “A l’Ouest” by the choreographer Olivia Grandville.
Since 2022, he is a lecturer in music at the ESACM (Art School of Clermont-Ferrand-FR).
His debut album ‘La mort aura tes yeux’ is announced on Standard In-Fi and Murailles Music.
The emergence of the solo ‘Mouvements fantômes, membres miroirs’ in its multiplied form (controlled alarm clocks, drone box and percussion) has generated a set of powerful desires to create new bodies of work together, as ramifications as much as one-off encounters, or as a continuum of what each of us can prepare together.
Encounters/work with a number of artists with aesthetics as diverse as they are inspiring are in the making for 2023 and 2024.
A triptych that will gradually unfold with Clara Lévy (a French violinist based in Brussels), Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (a Lebanese-Canadian musician, lead singer of Jerusalem In My Heart) and Yann Gourdon (a hurdy-gurdy player, founding member of the La Nòvia collective).
